Sprites rising high into the atmosphere in the skies above New Mexico; the thunderstorms that spawned these sprites were two states away in New Mexico. Sprites are gigantic red discharges above particularly strong thunderstorms — normally they are seen in the United Sates only in summer months, but this year they have been seen much earlier than expected (this photo was taken on March 30, 2012).
